
Times may be tough for retailers, but Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is forging ahead with an aggressive Southland expansion. The El Segundo-based retail chain plans to open nine additional California stores in September. The first four locations will open Sept. 8, including a store at Rosemead and Valley boulevards in Rosemead.
Tops Friendly Markets here posted net income of $11.96 million in the 16-week first quarter that ended April 24, the company said in a federal filing made this week in connection with a debt offering.
French retailer Les Mousquetaires is aiming for market share of 15% through the expansion of the number of Intermarché Express and Netto outlets it operates. The company will roll out its Intermarché Express outlets, aiming to operate 24 by the end of 2010.
TESCO IRELAND will open seven new stores as part of a €113 million investment in the Republic which will create 748 jobs. The grocery retailer, which already employs 13,400 staff across 120 outlets in the Republic, said the new stores would come on stream over the next 12 months.
Three years ago, Carrefour, the French hypermarket group, announced an expansion drive to open new stores in Thailand, backed by a Bt5bn ($154m) investment. Today Carrefour is planning to quit the country - where it added 16 stores to the 24 it had, to become one of the top five players - and to pull out of Malaysia and Singapore. Despite being the world's second-largest retailer by sales after Walmart of the US, it seems Carrefour will become less international under Lars Olofsson, chief executive.
