Wal-Mart Reassigns U.S. Stores Chief as Wife Recovers

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reassigned U.S. stores chief Eduardo Castro-Wright, putting him in charge of Internet operations so he can move to California where his wife is recovering from a heart transplant. William Simon, an executive vice president, will become chief executive officer for U.S. stores immediately, Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart said today in a statement. Castro-Wright remains vice chairman and will also head global sourcing, which focuses on cutting costs and improving quality.

Albertsons Activates Free Solar Panels on Three Stores

Albertsons, a division of Supervalu, and SunEdison on Tuesday announced the activation of rooftop solar power systems at three Albertsons grocery stores in Carlsbad, Oceanside and Alpine, Calif. The solar installations were constructed by REC Solar. SunEdison financed the solar power plants and will monitor and maintain the systems that will produce more than 12 million kilowatt hours of energy over the next 20 years.

The discount supermarket chain said fiscal year 2010 revenues rose 8% to €6.8 billion from €6.3 billion a year ago. Net profit for the year rose 8% to €329.6 million.

Takashimaya To Sell Off US Operations, Has Strong Q1

Takashimaya, Japan's second-largest department store chain, has said it plans to sell off its US operations, as it looks to focus on Asia. The announcement came even as the chain reported a solid set of results for its fiscal first quarter, and raised its full-year forecast. Meanwhile, for the three months ending May, net profit quadrupled to 1.35bn yen (E12.5m), from 316m yen last year.

Delhi Govt. Allows Wine Sales in Supermarkets

The Government of Delhi has allowed wine sales in the supermarkets of national capital region of Delhi. According to Mr. R. M. Pillai, Excise Commissioner, Government of Delhi, departmental stores shall have to obtain L 53 licence for selling domestic wines and L 53F license for selling foreign wines.
